Canada shares a land border with the contiguous United States and the state of Alaska in the northwest. While it is usually regarded as the second largest country in the world, by land area alone, Canada ranks fourth behind Russia, China and the United States.

Getting In

Visitors arriving by air enter via Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, Montreal and Ottawa. There are also international airports in small cities including Halifax, St John's, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Regina, Saskatoon, Kelowna and Victoria.

Traveling Around in Canada

The fastest way to travel large distances in Canada is to fly. The main national carrier, Air Canada, has the largest network of routes. For cheap flights between major cities, consider WestJet (www.westjet.ca).

If is possible to travel between major cities by bus, particularly in the Windsor-Quebec City corridor, which includes major cities such as Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa. Bus routes through the central heartland, such as through the prairies, can take several days, so unless you can bear the rare stops, it is really endurance travel for the hardy.

Preparing for your trip to Canada

The main languages spoken in Canada are English and (in Quebec particularly) French. If you are not comfortable in speaking these languages, you should make preparation to improve your command. After all, languages are the most reliable travel tools.
